For those of us who are larger than the average person, we can attest to the fact that fat Americans face discrimination on a daily basis. We are often denied access and opportunities in the workplace, in health care, and in education. Scientific scales are used to minimize and rate a fat individual to a number on a scale, or a percent on a BMI chart. A fat American is a commodity to be ridiculed, marginalized, a cost to be cut.

An American citizen is much more than just a BMI measurement! Size discrimination touches all races, genders and social levels. It is said that obesity is a cost that is dragging our nation down. If that’s true, then what is the cost of size discrimination? What will its impact be on our nation’s future? How is a fat American’s dating life affected, as well? Lack of Medical Services

Research conducted at Wake Forest School of Medicine demonstrated that many medical students have an unconscious bias against overweight patients. Theory suggests that doctors do assume obese patients will disregard medical advice, such as they’d seemingly have with the recommendation to eat healthy and exercise often, in spite of the fact that it’s impossible to tell whether a patient’s eating habits or physical activity is a direct result of their body type. The lack of consideration in these situations can lead to poor care and further health problems.

Similarly, doctors surveyed have agreed that they should be allowed to deny non-emergency treatments to individuals who need to lose weight or stop smoking.

Increased Likelihood of Conviction

Another study showed that when shown photos of thin men and women versus overweight men and women, male jurors were more likely to view the overweight women as guilty based on a Likert scale rating.

This means that if a thin woman and an overweight woman were on trial for the same crime, the jury would be more likely to convict the larger woman.

So much for innocent until proven guilty! It’s more like innocent until seen as heavy. This is often true in the dating world for overweight people, as well, which is why bbw dating sites  were created to help eliminate the anxiety of meeting new people.

Lack of Legal Rights

Although these examples of discrimination exist, there are currently no ways to protect people whose rights are being infringed upon due to their weight. A person can be fired based on their weight, even if they do their job well.

Impact On Earning Potential

One study suggests that approximately 50% of male CEOs are overweight, but only 5 to 22% of female CEOs had a BMI of over 30. While the BMI scale may not be the most  measure of health, this figure does go to show the extensive difference between how men and women who are considered overweight are promoted, or not promoted.

Ongoing Bullying

Children are more likely to make fun of their peers because of their weight, but fat-shaming is widely acceptable among adults. Somewhere along the way, it’s become common practice to turn heavier people into the butt of jokes.

Family Discontent

Perhaps the most disturbing of all types of discrimination is the one that exists within the family.

When looking into a parent’s willingness to help their child fund a new car, research determined that parents were less likely to provide for a child who is overweight. We would like to imagine that parents will love their children unequivocally, which makes these findings even more unsettling.

A child’s home life is what we base a child’s self-esteem on and so the negative consequences of an unhealthy family bias is far-reaching and very dangerous to a child’s health.

It’s been proven to be true that weight affects how we’re perceived, and how we perceive other people. The first step toward fixing any problem is admitting that problem exists. We can only hope that bringing more attention to this issue will prompt the appropriate changes.
