It’s time to address the elephant in my fall/winter closet full of weekend clothing

Fall/Winter Office Attire for Plus-Size Women

I am making a point this office season to change my working wardrobe ways. Too often I find myself rifling through my everyday clothing options in hopes of improvising a passable professional look. Why do I do this to myself instead of  just buying office specific pieces? Besides work being the last thing I want to think about outside the office, I had no clue where to start! Below are some of my favorite plus-size office wear tips I have collected along the way that I hope will help get you started as well!

Fit and Tips for Shopping Plus-Size Fall/Winter Work Attire

  • Plus-size ladies should stick to thinner/lighter materials for tops, jackets and sweaters and sturdier/thicker fabrics for skirts, dresses and pants. Extra material on my upper body tends to make me look bigger and boxier than I really am. However, a chunkier option for my bottoms and dresses gives me a shapely, structured look that smooths out imperfections and masks problem areas.
  • Don’t neglect quality for price. Workplace clothing gets a lot of stage time so it’s ok to spend more for premium products that will hold up well over the years. Use your working girl brain when shopping to make good investments on your business casual wardrobe, even if it means sacrificing quantity.
  • I used to have a bad habit of using the cold weather as an excuse to hide out under bigger, looser, and baggier clothing. Don’t do this!! In reality, it only made me look bigger and less put together. Buy yourself a warm jacket and keep rocking your form fitted (not to be confused with tight) looks to the office.

High-Waisted Plus-Size Skirt

If done right, a high-waisted skirt can be a plus-size girl’s best friend. I sometimes fight the urge to hide my figure under unshapely garments, but I find that the high-waisted style gives me a womanly silhouette I can feel confident about. Here are a few of my personal favorite shopping tips for fall/winter plus-size high waisted skirts

  • Choose thicker materials for a smoother, slimming effect. Thin fabrics highlight imperfections as well as panty and stocking lines. Check out the Grey Candace Flirty Pencil Skirt above for a great example of a structured, shapely, and smooth skirted office look.
  • Make sure you have a little extra room from the hips up. I find overly tight skirt tops can create a bulging look that draws negative attention to my curves.
  • A high-waist line can be found in all skirt shapes, lengths, and styles! Shop pleated, pencil, flowy, A-line, and/or tiered skirts to quench your high-waisted thirst. I for one find a high waisted pleat skirt like the featured black faux-leather plus-size Calvin Klein  and plus-size high waisted a-line skirts to be especially flattering and trendy
  • When it comes to length, anywhere from an inch above to an inch below the knee is a safe zone for plus-size professionals. Knee length plus-size skirts are both aesthetically complimentary and work appropriate.

Plus-Size Blazers

Nothing puts the cherry on top of my business casual look like a fitted plus-size blazer. Blazers are versatile and can be used to enhance professionalism, style, and/or edge depending on color & design choice. When shopping blazers for your curvy figure…

  • Open is better! Closed blazers cut me off and take focus away from the rest of my outfit. Unbutton your jacket for a more complete, welcoming look
  • When it comes to all things blazers this fall/winter season, don’t go back to black! While every professional woman should have a reliable black blazer or two, it’s time to break out of our business casual shells. Don’t be afraid to experiment with patterns like the grey and white patterned blazer featured above or bright colored plus-size blazers to add some flare to your office threads
  • Avoid any and all shoulder padding! I don’t know about you guys, but anything that makes me look or feel broader is to be avoided like the plague. I need no help in this area, thanks anyway!
  • Try non-conventional fits and fabrics like the red plus-size Ponte Cascade blazer featured above. Playful collars, cinched waist lines, and flexible fabrics are some ways you can improve your fall/winter plus-size blazer game. As an added bonus, these blazer enhancements have an undeniable slimming effect!

Plus-Size Office Dresses

As a plus-size woman, I live for a good dress option (or 20). The last thing I want to do when I am feeling bloated or otherwise body conscious is deal with restricting bottoms. Plus-size work dresses are ideal for providing comfort, style, and sophistication to the full figured career woman. Here are some quick tips for your fall/winter dress shopping, and don’t forget to use the applicable skirt advice from above as well!

  • As a curvy girl, I find plus-size belted work dresses to be slimming and adorable (without compromising your professional image).
  • Plus-size color block dresses are in this fall/winter season and happen to work great in the business casual category. Color contrast helps create a narrowing illusion that is particularly desirable to curvy women like myself. Have fun playing with different color combinations!
  • Lace is back and it’s classier than ever. Add a vintage vibe to your office getup by shopping plus-size lace dresses for work.
